It’s not hard to believe that 97.5% of the childcare workforce is female and that only 1% of nursery nurses are male, what is fairly astonishing is that this figure of 1% has remained unchanged for the past ten years. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised – the male population as a whole is routinely (and unfairly) treated with suspicion when it comes to children and our media do nothing to reverse this trend but even so....... Comments 0Perhaps it’s because I played with dolls as a child or maybe because I was the first of my peers to have a baby – whatever the reason, it took me a while to shake the feeling that I wasn’t a real Mum – that I wasn’t an impostor pushing a buggy, or someone playing ‘let’s pretend’ . Ironically enough, now that my stay at home with the children days are nearly over, I do at last feel like a bona fide Mum, and now sometimes struggle to feel as if I belong anywhere else.......
