Oh for those loved up days
Posted: 11 November 2009
It tickled me no end to hear that the sound of a Mother’s voice has such an influence that even tiny babies cry with an accent. For example, babies born to French Mothers crying with a rising melody and those born to German Mothers with a falling melody shape – reflecting the patterns characteristic to those two languages and proving that even in the womb babies are highly motivated to imitate their Mother. How wonderful and how very precious.
Such a shame it’s so short lived.
My nine year old would rather do anything than be influenced by the sound of my voice – why else does she become suddenly and inexplicably deaf whenever it’s time to get ready for school, stop fighting with her brother or tidy her room? And as for a desire to imitate me?! So embarrassed by me she practically throws herself from the moving car during the school drop off (OK it is plastered with Pyajam Drama rainbows and the like but even so) and she can’t even bring herslef to walk anywhere with me in public if I am wearing:
a) make up
b) high heels or
c) anything that may have anychance of making me look half way attractive
In truth, she loves me but (at the moment anyway) would rather be anyone but me. Oh for those wonderful loved up newborn days....it’s almost making me broody..
