How to get the best out of your mixed 'Raindrops' and 'Rainbows' class

1) Arrive a little early on your first week if you can. This will lessen the chance of your child becoming overwhelmed by giving them a chance to say ‘hello’ to their teacher and familiarise themselves with their surroundings before everyone else arrives.

2) Sit with your child at the beginning and end of each class. Pyjama Drama works best, and children develop key skills more rapidly when children and adults share at least some of the session together. If, during the more active parts of the class your child is happy to go it alone, take a seat and enjoy the fun!

3) Every child is different, and all develop their skills at their own pace. This means that some will have the confidence to share their ideas and join in from the first class, and others won’t. Don’t assume that if your child prefers to watch the class from the safety of your knee they’re not learning – children learn through observation and will get involved as soon as their confidence builds, even if it takes a few weeks.

4) Observe your child and their responses. If you notice them getting upset, distressed, or cross, please don’t be afraid to step in and deal with the situation as you see fit. This may mean sitting with them for a few minutes or temporarily removing them from the session until they feel better.

5) Although we will never ask you do any actual drama (that’s our teachers’ job), your child might want or need you to join in at times. If they’re happy to participate independently, please take a seat from where you can observe the fun but be close enough to step in and offer support if needed.

Meet Ruth Cross...

I am a mum of two very imaginative and dramatic children, Beatrice is 7 and Theo is 4. I have always loved Drama from a very young age, I performed on stage in plays and dance shows, I loved being able to lose myself in an imaginary world. As a naturally shy child, drama was my outlet. I then went on to study Theatre at University. Since becoming a mum I have discovered my inner child again, playing with my children and seeing where their imaginations take them is just incredible. I was on the look out for a more flexible career, that would give me the work/life balance around the children that I craved and I discovered Pyjama Drama, after seeing a class in action I was absolutely hooked. These classes offer so much more than a DRAMA class, they inspire an exploration for each child of not only their imaginations, but their use of language, their bodies and how they connect with their peers. With a new adventure waiting every week, the children can develop key skills and watch their confidence blossom, in a safe and nurturing environment, where ideas are not just shared but encouraged. I’m so looking forward to meeting you all and having tons of FUN!
